TEM support films

Wide selection of high quality TEM support films ready-to-use, that allow to save precious time. The traditional formvar- and carbon-based support films are realized with dedicated tools in controlled environment, and they are all checked with a TEM before shipping. The EM-Tec silicon nitride TEM support film are realized with the most recent semiconductor manufacturing techniques, ideal for experiments on a strong support and high temperature applications. The graphite films represent the thinnest TEM support films.
All the TEM support films are sold in a storage box.

EMR Carbon TEM Support Films

The C- range continuous Carbon only support films provide a thin electron transparent support without hydrocarbons present. A good solution for imaging nano-particles and viruses. Carbon film thickness is in the range of 15-20nm providing a thin consistent carbon film. The carbon TEM support films are electrically and thermally conductive under the electron beam at room temperature and provide image and specimen stability for high resolution imaging.

The carbon TEM support films are available on 200, 300 and 400 mesh copper, nickel and gold grids. See the matrix below for the currently available TEM support films with packaging sizes of 25, 50 and 100/box.

EMR Holey carbon TEM Support Films

The HC range of Holey Carbon support films offer a pure carbon support film with a range of relatively small holes. Holey carbon films are especially suited for suspensions of viruses or nano particles. They offer a cost effective solution where a continuous carbon film is not desirable. About half of the supported area of the holey carbon support film still consists of carbon.

EMR Lacey carbon TEM Support Films

The LC – range of Lacey Carbon support films provide a wide range of hole sizes and offer a solution when a continuous carbon film is not desirable. Lacey Carbon support films are more robust than Holey Carbon support films and are ideal for specimens requiring more rigorous pre-treatments.  Lacey Carbon support films offer more open area than holey carbon films and resemble a random mesh. They are also ideal as support films for graphene and graphene oxide films.

The F- range Formvar only TEM support films are an excellent solution for imaging fragile sections in the TEM including ultra-thin cryo-sections. Formvar offers mechanically stable support films.

EM Tec Formvar Carbon TEM Support Films

The FC – range Formvar Carbon support films are more robust than carbon only films. The formvar carbon TEM support films offer a good solution where a carbon only film only film would be too fragile to withstand pre-treatments and/or additional processing. They also provide the option to remove the formvar from the film before use.

EM-Tec TEM Resolution, Calibration and Test Standards

Practical, high quality TEM resolution, calibration and test standards to optimise the performance of your TEM. Manufactured from specially selected materials to produce reliable and field proven TEM test standards which are commonly used. The TEM standards are using either copper or gold square mesh grids. The TEM performance test, calibration or resolution check can be performed where the materials span the opening in the carbon film or between the grid bars.

#33-001010 EM-Tec TS1 TEM test standard perforated carbon film

The perforated (holey) carbon film is used for TEM performance checks, especially astigmatism correction. Best used at magnifications up to 250,000x. The perforated carbon film is mounted on a 400 mesh Cu TEM grid.

#33-001020 EM-Tec TS2 TEM test standard evaporated Pt/Ir

This TEM test standard provides Platinum/Iridium particles evaporated on a holey carbon film. The holes in the carbon film are useful for focussing and astigmatism corrections. The small crystals of Pt/Ir provide excellent high contrast particles for resolution checks using the point separation test. Provided on a 300 mesh Cu TEM grid.

#33-001030 EM-Tec TS3 TEM combined test specimen standard

The combined test specimen standard provides a 3 in 1 method for testing the performance of the TEM. The combined test specimen consists of graphitised carbon particles on a holey carbon which are shadowed with gold. Combines astigmatism test using perforated carbon film with resolution tests using graphitised carbon black and fine gold particles. The evaporated gold forms small polycrystalline islands in which lattice fringes can be resolved. The combined test specimen can also be used for contamination measurements by noting the carbon depositing rate within the holes of the gold film. Mounted on a 300 mesh copper TEM grid.

#33-001050 EM-Tec TC2 TEM calibration standard evaporated Al film

The aluminium film of around 30nm is used for calculating the value of the camera length. The small Al crystals provide a well defined diffraction pattern. The Al film is evaporated on a holey carbon on a 400 mesh Cu TEM grid.

#33-001070 EM-Tec TR1 TEM resolution standard fine gold particles

The finely dispersed thin gold particles on a carbon film provide an excellent high resolution TEM standard. The gold particle size distribution is normally in the 2nm to 9nm range. Image quality, magnification and instrument stability are readily determined. For resolution assessment, this standard offers a choice of crystalline orientation on static or low tilt stages. The thickness of the crystals can be calculated form the projected shape of the gold crystal. The background noise from the structure of the carbon support film helps in determining the operating transfer function.

Graphitised carbon black provides a stable resolution standard for TEM resolution testing. The graphitised carbon black particles exhibit lattice planes following the contours of the particles. Lattice plane distance is 0.34nm. Supplied on a holey carbon film on a copper TEM grid.

EM-Tec Graphene TEM support films

The EM-Tec graphene TEM support films are extremely thin graphene sheets supported by either lacey carbon or fine mesh copper grids. The EM-Tec graphene supports are available with single, dual, 3-5 and 6-8 layers (sheets) of graphene and cover the 3mm diameter TEM grid. Completely. The usable area of the graphene surface is approximately 75% due to some folds and wrinkles in the graphene film. The EM-Tec research ready TEM supports enable getting quicker results in the many fields of research were graphene is used.
Graphene, with it’s unique properties, offers a support TEM support film which is much thinner, yet more conductive than the traditional carbon support films. Even with the hexagonal structure, the contribution to the image formation signal is rather low. These properties make the single and dual layer graphene films ideal for high resolution TEM imaging, nanoparticles imaging and imaging of weak contrast specimens.
The 3-5 and 6-8 layers graphene TEM support films are more robust and are research-ready platforms. They can be used straight out of the box. They enable conducting experiments directly with or on the graphene film with integrated or subsequent TEM imaging.
The graphene used for the EM-Tec graphene TEM support films is grown on copper foil using the CVD process. The graphene is isolated by etching away the copper foil and is then transferred on the lacey carbon or the 2000 mesh grids. The result is a graphene support film with a graphene film consisting of either a single, dual, 3-5 or 6-8 layers of graphene. As a result of the manufacturing and handling processes, some unavoidable sub-micron copper or copper-chloride particles can be found across the graphene films.
The sheet resistance for a single layer of graphene is 600 Ohm/sq.
The in-plane modulus of the graphene used is 0.9 TPa (compared to 1.0 Tpa for graphene produced by the scotch tape method).

Grid supports

The EM-Tec graphene TEM support films are available with two types of supports. The graphene covers the entire 3mm TEM grid and is deposited directly onto:
– High quality, clean lacey carbon which  is supported by 300 square mesh copper grids. The result is graphene layer(s) on top of lacey carbon on top of 300 mesh copper grids. The usable area is about 2mm in diameter with a transmission of 49%. The openings in the lacey carbon are randomly distributed, with the majority varying from 15 to 1µm leaving unsupported graphene over the lacey openings.
– 2000 mesh fine aperture copper grids supported by 2x1mm slotted copper grids. This combination delivers a rigid support, yet the total thickness is less than 50µm. The usable area is a slot of 2x1mm with a transmission of 41%. The openings in the 2000 mesh copper grid are circular with a diameter of 6.5µm leaving unsupported graphene over these circular openings.
